Shirin Neshat is an artist I am currently researching. She works with Photography and Film to document and question social, cultural, and political changes in Post-Islamic Revolution Iran. What drew me to her work was the starkness of the imagery, the sharp contrasts of light against dark, and the tattoo-like writing on the faces, hands and feet. My own work is with india ink and black watercolor. I try to achieve similar value transitions as well as a focus on figures and people. My brush strokes try to mimic calligraphy much like the Farsi text on the skin. I will continue to draw inspiration from her work and try to make something original for myself.
